Have you ever watched kids running around with a glass jar trying to catch fireflies? It looks like fun to watch them glowing. They make “holes” in the darkness. Cockroaches, on the other hand, hide in cold and dark places and only come out looking for food. Similarly, God calls us to be hot Christians, proud and bold of the Word of God and His commandments, and not cold Christians, shy and shielded from His Word.
The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. 1 John 3: 24
The question now is, “Are you a cockroach or a firefly?” Why do some Christians glow in the dark, while others blend in that they are indistinguishable from the darkness around them? We are born as cockroaches, but born-again fireflies. So, “How can I be a firefly for Christ?”
John speaks about relationship and fellowship with the Father and Jesus Christ and also will learn about the power source which helps sustain the joy we experience when we delight in fellowship with our Father: the Holy Spirit.
Thinks back to the promises Jesus makes in the Upper Room – in particular the promise about a Helper who would guide us into all truth. In order to do so, John develops the subject into three sections:
Living with the Holy Spirit, Looking for the Holy Spirit, Listening to the Holy Spirit
Living with the Holy Spirit, we return once again to our theme of fellowship, not relationship. Notice the keyword of the verse: lives. “The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us” (3:24).
The word “live” or “abide” is used frequently in the Gospel of John and even more so in 1 John! The use of these words continues to portray a picture of intimacy and fellowship. So, to abide in Him is to know Him intimately and to know God intimately is equated with keeping His commandments.
The Holy Spirit is the proof and the manifestation of God in us and is a sign to us that we are in fellowship with God when we abide in Jesus. When we abide and enjoy His presence, we are like fireflies. His fruit is in us, and we enjoy being who we are, manifesting the glory of the Lord amid the darkness.
Glow like a firefly for Jesus!

Advertisements Today’s passage of Scripture, John is telling us how to go about sacrificial love. 19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, ifContinue reading →
Advertisements An act of sacrificial love is to love right, sincerely and in truth. This is the kind of love we are urged to pursue. The kind of love that flows from the heart comes from those who are Christ-centered, rooted in Christ as our vine, a born-again Christian whose fruit is evidence by theContinue reading →
