An act of sacrificial love is to love right, sincerely and in truth. This is the kind of love we are urged to pursue. The kind of love that flows from the heart comes from those who are Christ-centered, rooted in Christ as our vine, a born-again Christian whose fruit is evidence by the way the person lives in the light of Jesus.
21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us 1 John 3:21-23
Earlier on in this series, I have spoken about the problem of a corrupt conscience – it is bad news. When your conscience is clouded with guilt, a barrier is created between us and God, we are unable to love others as He loves us. The good news is that there is a blessing which goes along with a clear conscience:
“21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us”. 1 John 3:21-23
Confidence before God is the opposite of doubt. Having the certainty of knowing that we can come boldly before the throne of grace is the blessing of a clear conscience – true confidence in God. This confidence in God is so important – The book of James tells us “6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” James 1:6-8
The joy is that through the blood of Jesus we are cleansed from all unrighteousness, there is no shame, there is no barrier. Our Father has cleansed us, and we can abide in Him.
Sincere Faith + Good Conscience + Pure Heart = Sacrificial Love
Jesus gave us this command — to love one another as He loved us. Commend yourself to Jesus who knows your heart better than you do and love in truth!
