#5 Lies Christians Believe

Maybe God isn’t who you think He is. He’s much better. This series will help you identify some Christian clichés we’ve all heard somewhere before but they are actually un-biblical lies. These clichés although innocent, are harmful to our faith and they keep far too many believers stuck in spiritual immaturity. Let’s replace these clichés with truths about God from the Bible, that will bring encouragement and freedom to our lives.

First posts in this series:

#1 God won’t give you more than you can handle

#2 Is God gaining new angels every day

#3 Follow your heart

#4 God has forsaken me

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Matthew 16:24-28

Christ died to save us from hell but not to save us from the cross. He died so that we could be glorified, but not to keep us from being crucified.

Believe in Yourself

How many times in your life have you been given a pep talk and in that pep talk you are told to “Believe in yourself!” It is a banner statement in our new tradition of building up the self-esteem of this new generation.

We love to be control, to take matters into our own hands, this sort of statement resonates with our human nature because of this. We trust in ourselves because it makes us feel in control and confident. Deep down, however, in the true essence of who we are, in our identity in Christ, in our soul and spirit, we know it’s a lie. The truth is, the older you get, the more you begin to realise that one of your greatest enemies is yourself. I’ve come to learn that the hard way. No one has misleads you more than you mislead yourself. No one lies to you more than you lie to yourself. No one has hurt, distracted, or hindered you more than you have. The more you believe in yourself, the deeper the hole you find yourself in. Have you ever noticed that the harder you try, the more you mess up?

If you attempt to live life believing in yourself only, you will be trapped by discouragement, fear, anxiety, and worry. The pressure of trying to be in control of all situations sets you up for failure. You were not made to believe in yourself, because you were not made to be in control. You were made to believe in Jesus. You were made to trust Jesus to be in control. You were made to have a new identity in Christ.

The great things about believing in Jesus and trusting Him with your life is that He does not struggle with the same things you and I do. He doesn’t gets stressed, anxious, or worried. We will fail. He never does. We will make mistakes. He never does. We will make a mess of things. He never does. He can be trusted.

What do you think most people mean when they use the statement “Believe in yourself”?

Why do you think it’s so hard to trust Jesus to be in control of every area of your life? What is one thing in your life—just one—that you can turn over to Jesus. Start with one, and watch how your life changes

You don’t have to live with the pressure of believing in yourself when you fully trust Jesus to be in control.

The Church

The church may be separated into denominations, but there are three things that unify the whole body of Christ. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and …
